A super easy dal recipe is Thovve, this thovve is made with moong dal to make it even more easier. A dal dish which is mild in taste, no masala or spice powders added to that.

Thovve is made with dal, tomatoes and few chillies. Taste good with spicy side dish like Egg roast or Potato dry fry. Thovve pairs very well with Chapathi and roti as well.

Just boil moong dal add in cubed tomatoes, onions and a few green chillies, once dal is cooked temper with lots of Jeera / cummin  and Pepper. That's it ! Hesarubele Tove is ready to eat with hot rice and spicy egg fry.

Thovve or moong dal recipe is a favorite dish for all kids for its blandness, this is even preferred during feverish or when you wanted to eat non-spicy food. 

We prefer this on any hurry days, you can add all the ingredients and pressure cook for two whistles and then temper with Jeera and Pepper. Can be prepared in just about 10 to 15 minutes, adjacently if you can make rice and hard boil eggs ....Yes your complete lunch or dinner is ready by 15 minutes. 

Do try this easy dish with Potato dry fry or Egg spicy fry and serve with hot rice.

Apply thick coat of Chilli powder and salt on the hard boiled eggs and roast in oil, simple side dish for rice.

Add watery vegetables like ridge gourd / Herekai or bottle gourd / Sorekai or Chayote squash / Seemebadanekai to thovve along with tomatoes. Even Basale Soppu / Mangalore Spinach or vine spinach can be added.

Ingredients for Hesarubele tove

  1. Moong dal / hesarubele  - 1 cup 
  2. Onion - 1 small
  3. Tomatoes - 2
  4. Green chillies - 3 
  5. Turmeric powder - 1/4 teaspoon



For Tempering
  1. Oil - 1 teaspoon
  2. Jeera / cummin - 3/4 teaspoon
  3. Pepper corns - 1/2 teaspoon
  4. Mustard - 1/4 teaspoon
  5. Hing / Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon

Instructions  


  1. Wash and soak moong dal for about 5 minutes 

  2. Boil water in a pan and add soaked moong dal and cook, add turmeric powder while cooking 

  3. When dal is half cooked add in chopped onions, tomatoes, chillies 
  4. Boil until tomatoes and dal is cooked well

  5. In a small sauce pan heat a teaspoon oil, add mustard

  6. When mustard splutters add Jeera / Cummin, pepper corns and hing - switch off the flame - tempering is ready 

  7. Add this tempering to cooked dal and switch off the flame. Thovve is ready to be served.


Note:

Add vegetables like  ridge gourd / herekaye, bottle gourd / sorekaye, chayote squash / seemebadhanekaye or even basale soppu with the dal  

Adding curry leaves is also preferred for tempering

Green chillies can be adjusted according to one's taste, usually we add only few chillies for this recipe

Add dal, tomatoes, onions and green chillies with turmeric in a pressure cooker and cook for two whistles. This makes cooking faster.

What is Thovve? 

Thovve is a mild flavored dal made with moong dal, tomatoes and few chillies. Lots of Cumming and Pepper is added for best digestion. This can make a perfect side dish for Chapati, roti and Rice. 

Can Thovve be made with Toor dal?

Yes, Thovve can also be made with Toor dal, Unlike sambar - NO Masalas or spice powder go into thovve. 

What is the best combination for thovve?

Thovve is usually had with rice, but this tastes good even with chapathi and rotis. 

How thovve is different from Sambar?

Thovve is a mild dal gravy, but no sambar powder is added. Whereas Sambar is a spicy gravy made with sambar powder and vegetables. Sometimes watery vegetables are added to thovve, like ridge gourd, bottle gourd.
