Kodo millet bisi bele bath | Harka bisi bele bath | Healthy Karnataka bisi
bele bath recipe with millet
Kodo millet in other languages - Hindi: Kodra; Tamil: Varagu; Telugu: Arikelu; Kannada: Harka/ Arka;
Millet bisi bele bath with kodo millet (harka), tastes even better than the
regular rice bisi bele bath. And the flavor is also amazing.
One thing I noticed was rice bisi bele bath becomes hard once cooled
where-as kodo or any other millet bisi bele bath remains soft and also is
suitable for lunch box.
Bisi bele bath being staple and famous one-pot-meal of
Karnataka why not we try this healthier version with millets, I tried
bisi bele bath with almost all the millets harka, saame, navane, all of
them tastes good.
Bisi bele bath is a popular dish of Karnataka, this is also healthy and
a simple dish we usually make it for breakfast. This dish contains all
the nutrients required for an early morning food - dal for protein, rice
or millet for carbs, veggies for vitamins, spice & ghee for
digestion. what more can you ask for?
And this one being millet bisi bele bath- adds additional benefits of
millet's. Most people after knowing the benefits of millet's try to consume
in many ways which might not be a tastier dish and then stop eating
millet's. But if you try this recipe, you will definitely fall in love
with this recipe for sure.
Traditionally, preparation is done by first cooking dal with lots of water in open
container and when dal is half cooked add soaked rice or millet, after
rice is cooked to 3/4 th, add in veggies and spice powder and salt (veggies
like carrot, beans, potatoes, navil kosu /nokal or turnip, onions and
tomatoes can be added) then stir fry capsicum in oil and add at the end once
all other veggies are cooked (this is optional) . Then add tamarind and
jaggery and cook till all of them blend well. Then garnish with
ghee, mustard, hing and hand full of cashews.
The bisi bele bath needs a spice powder which can be prepared before-hand and store for few days as well. But preferably use up within two
weeks to get fresh aroma to the recipe. I prepare this powder very
simple and a very few ingredients that my grand-mom thought me, not to
complicate with all the spices from kitchen. As I always say, simple
ingredients adds good taste than adding many. So for bisi bele bath I
use only cinnamon, cloves for aroma along with chana dal, urad dal,
coriander seeds and red chillies that is all bisi bele bath spice powder
is ready in few minutes.
And similarly preparing this recipe is also very easy I would say this
is a perfect bachelors and beginners recipe. I started preparing this
at-least once in a week and also learnt a easy way, I add all the
ingredients - millets, dal, veggies, spice, salt and water and pressure
cook, then open and add very little tamarind and jaggery if liked and
season with mustard, jeera and lots of cashew. You can prepare this in
just 30 minutes.
Bisi bele bath is eaten with khara boondi and chips. Please give a try
this method and enjoy with your family and friends.
