I am sure ! most of us have heard from our Grand Parents - how to save or Spend money wisely.
Same with me as well, I have grown up hearing lots about my great-great grand mom story from my Dad and his mother.. that is my Grand mom.
Very interesting and effective even for today's lifestyle
Let me write down what ever I remember... I am sure you also heard all these from your Grandparents.

My great-great Grand mom - means My Dad's Mom's Grand Mom ( My Grand mom's Grand-Mom)
She was into earning money, In those days when many women were constrained to home. She was a great Business Women I would say.
Her Simple Techniques of Saving Money
1. Put your change after shopping in Savings Box
2. Keep money in different places
3. Hide money and forget
4. Save in Clay money bank
5. Spend money only on required items
1. Put your change after shopping in Savings Box
When ever you take out some money for spending the remaining change from the spending should not go into your usual money box or Purse.
Rather put them in different place - or maintain a small saving box and drop all the change.
For example you take Rs. 100 for some shopping, but you get to spend only Rs.98 then the remaining Rs. 2 ..put them in a saving box.
Today this might be Rs. 2, the other day you will only spend Rs. 80, next day only Rs. 60, so then you will save Rs. 20 and Rs. 40 ..
This makes a big money few months later or at the end of the year. This is a real surprise for you to see these huge amount saved at the end of Month or even Year.
2. Keep money in different places
Do not keep all the money at one place. She will rather keep in all the Shelves, those days they had Gudu (ಗೂಡು) on the walls. She will put money in those Gudu each time she gets or earn some petty money.
What happens with this method is ?
When you need to buy some small items at door step, you need not run to your purse.
or you need to give some change to Cooking Gas Cylinder delivery boy, just grab some from here and give them.
Most Important Point:
You are unknowingly saving some money... might be small amount now. At the end of the month you collect all of them.. this will surely become a big money.. you can put this also into your savings box. Start again same process for next month.
This way you have some good amount at the end of the year.
Try this step without fail, very useful and successful step. Do not miss this step.
3. Hide money and Forget
Those days ladies will hide money in the pots that was used for storing Pulses and Rice. I have seen even my mom hiding money this way but not in pots... but was storage-steel containers.
Benefits in this:
You are hiding from your self :- means you will forget there is some money kept there, so you do not spend them. Any time later when you find them .. while cleaning or else when opened for refill the item..you will be surprised !!!
or even if you remember.. you can use this money for any emergency, if you leave it in the same place.
This actual is a very beneficial step. My dad and myself both follow this. My dad used old purse or pouches.
When we were small, suppose we wanted to go for a movie at the end of the month and my dad or mom didn't have that much money. ( I will let you why they run short of money at the end of the month in a short while) My dad will take out this money from which ever place he remembers, Rest, that which he don't remember... he will take them out while cleaning or replacing that box or purse when ever it is done.. till then the money remains there.
Actually once you start hiding or saving in all places.. like all the purses you possess or any savings box or container in Kitchen or even in Pooja Room ... this actually reflects that Goddess Lakshmi is at your place- this is a saying in our India.
This is not a petty money, but some thousands of rupees (save more money this way). This will accumulate even to pay up your Kids fees Or buy a beautiful Gold Jewel Or will be handy in Emergency.
Do not miss this step. I would say all the family members should follow this.
These days if you have Savings account transfer extra amount into Recurring deposit every month. This makes you lock some amount which you will not use or spend.
4. Buy a Clay money bank and save money regularly.
Either in name of God - like on Friday or Saturday or any day..save money systematically.
This becomes a good practice and let all the family members do the same.
The money collected at the end of the year can be spent on any Pilgrimage or any Pooja at home.
So that you need not worry on the expenditure for the Temple trips or good Pooja function and get together at home.
By this you will also get relaxed and start working with enthusiasm after your trip to temple and start earning more again.
This might look very simple or kiddish. But this is a very effective way to save good money. You can drop as much as you can and whenever you can.
If not trip, You can later add this money to your any investment elements.
This should be in Clay only you cannot open them on requirement. And you do not want to break that until it is full.
5. Spend money only on required items
My great grand mom will say - why she needed another set of clothes when she already 2 sets, one is wearing and one is washed and put for drying for next day. She had only one pair of Sandal.
Do not spend on items which is not required for now. Do not buy and store.
But I understand at this time period we cannot survive with just 2 sets of cloths and a pair of Sandal. This was for her time. Actual meaning for today's time is - do not buy unnecessary quantity of things,what ever it may be like clothes, shoes, sandals, bags, watches..etc.
Limit to your buying. This will definitely save a lot of money.
Just practice this step, when ever you feel or want to buy some item, check the price of that item, and drop the same amount in the savings box. You will see a lot of money saved in that box, Which can be used up for a very worthy thing like Gold saving or any other mode of saving.
Conclusion
Let this be the first step of saving money. There are many more by which you can gain or retain or grow your money that was followed from our ancestors. I will write them in my next coming blogs.
These are the steps that was followed those old days, when banks were not popular or not everyone were saving in banks. You can adapt these steps to focus on any effectively and working schemes for this time period. Through which, we not only focus on saving money but also we can see how we can let that money grow many times.
