Nellikai Chitranna Recipe is a very simple-tangy rice made for breakfast or lunch. Saute gooseberries / bettada nellikai green chillies seasoning up with urad, channa dal and peanuts for crunchy. Mix this to cooked rice to prepare Karnataka's popular Nellikai Chitranna or Gooseberry tangy rice.

Today lets see how to make Chitranna, this requires cooked and cooled rice as usual.. required for any chitranna. Chitranna is nothing but seasoned rice with main ingredients like lemon, gooseberries, tomato, coconut, tamarind or onions. 

Nellikai chitranna is made with grated gooseberries / bettada nellikai  and chillies as main ingredients, tempering is done with little oil, urad and channadal, turmeric and peanuts. Then the nellikai chitranna mixture is ready. You can also store this for few days, and mix this with cooked rice when required. This can be perfect for packing for one day trips and lunch boxes.

Ingredients for Nellikai Chitranna

  1. Cooked rice - 2 cups
  2. Bettada nellikai / Gooseberries - 2 to 3 
  3. Green chillies - 3
  4. Turmeric - 1/4 teaspoon
  5. Coriander leaves 

For Seasoning 
  1. Oil - 3 tablespoons
  2. Mustard - 1/4 teaspoon
  3. Urad dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  4. Chana dal - 1/2 teaspoon
  5. Peanuts - 2 table spoons
  6. Curry leaves 

Instructions  


  1. Wash and grate gooseberries / bettada nellikai  

  2. Heat a pan with oil and add mustard, urad dal and chana dal 

  3. Saute for a minute and add peanuts 

  4. Saute until peanuts are done and then add green chillies 
  5. Add Curry leaves, turmeric and grated gooseberries 

  6. Saute and add 1/2 lemon juice (this is optional) 

  7. Then add cooked rice and give a good mix and adjust salt  

  8. At the end add in finely chopped coriander and switch off the heat  


Note:

Lemon juice is optional, the tangyness in the rice can be adjusted with this 

Grated coconut can be added at the end, this renders extra taste. 

This prepared mixture can be stored in refrigerator for about 2 days. when ever required remove and mix cooked rice and ready to serve
